Consumers’ Health Awareness Network Newfoundland and Labrador (CHANNAL) is the only consumer-led mental health organization in the province. They are a provincial non-profit organization that exists to build and strengthen a self-help network among individuals who live with mental health issues. CHANNAL’s aim is to combat isolation for those living with mental illness, to provide a forum for mental health consumers’ concerns, to educate the public on issues relevant to mental health consumers and to offer advocacy, social and emotional support to mental health consumers. 

Offer peer support groups at this location and provides peer support services across Newfoundland.

Offer a variety of programs including consumer and family supports.

Strengthening Families Together program:  The program covers various topics such as, What is Mental Illness, causes, diagnosis, treatments and addiction issues, understanding the mental Health System.  This program is offered as a 10 session service.

The Iris Group is a monthly support group for consumers and family members. Meetings are usually scheduled once a month, and normally have a guest speaker chosen by the participants. If you would like more information on an existing support group contact the office.

    COMMUNITY-BASED COUNSELLING AGENCIES- Sliding-scale fees

    The organizations below are non-profit. Counselling fees are geared to income / sliding scale. This means that the fees are adjusted based on the client’s income level – the less you make, the less you pay per session. Usually there is a waiting period to get in for the first appointment. On average, it can take one to two months for first session. Please call each organization to ask about fees and wait times – they often vary from one organization to the next.
