Speaking Out

Recommended Posts

Hi, everyone!

This is my greeting to the AS world. :)  I've had a lot of trauma in my life by many different kinds of people.  Most of the time I can handle it.  Actually, most of the time I don't even think of it.  But I've been inspired by the Stanford victim and the many other publications that I've read about rape culture and feminism.  I want to acknowledge my experiences for what they were.  I want to stand up and say it's happened to me and it's not ok!  Yes, it affects me.  Yes, I want to find people that understand what I've gone through.  But I also want to use myself as an example of another ordinary woman who has had the misfortune of being taken advantage of.  What happens to us is far too common, and I want everyone here to know that we are not weird or different.  In fact, we are just like everyone else.  Everyone just doesn't talk about it.  We do.

You're welcome!  And thank you!  We need to take control of our experiences instead of letting them control us!

Hi OrdinaryMe,

Welcome to AS. I am very sorry that you have suffered trauma, and tho most of the time you are able to handle it, I wish there was nothing for you to handle. Nobody has the right to hurt another like this. I do admire your courage. Being able to speak up and acknowledge what has happened and saying it wasn't ok, because it wasn't. I am sure that your positive attitude will be appreciated here, just as much as I am sure that the support your receive here will be appreciated by you. We all support one another, which makes this a great site. I look forward to seeing you around the boards. Best wishes on your healing journey.

Mary

The Stanford victim is I think what has caused me to want to talk about it.  Except for its something I have been trying to block out and everywhere I go there is a reminder of the Stanford rape.  It is triggering me, much because it is similar to what happened to me, and so much of what the victim said in her letter I can relate to.  I'm sorry for what you have gone through.   You're not alone!
